(1977 – Present; Kwakwaka’wakw)
Rande Cook was born in 1977 in Alert Bay, a small town located in northern Vancouver Island. Raised by his grandparents, Rande grew up with strong cultural ties and a fascination with Kwakwaka’wakw art and its relationship to his family and heritage. Rande credits his brother, Will Cook Jr., and fellow artists Beau Dick, Don Yeomans, and Bruce Alfred as his primary influences.
In 1991, Rande relocated to Vancouver to further his education and develop his artistic abilities. Kwakwaka’wakw artist Bruce Alfred taught Rande the art of making bentwood boxes. He began an apprenticeship under John Livingston in 2002, who taught him the art of woodcarving, mask making, box design, and other traditional forms of Northwest Coast art. Rande also enjoys exploring new materials, such as gold, silver, and ivory carving. He has exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and his work was also featured in the Art Gallery of Victoria’s 2013 exhibition, “Raven in a Material World.” Rande is seen as a leading figure in contemporary Northwest Coast art, as he unites traditional elements with a modern, forward-looking vision.
