Arctic Expression - 40 years of Inuit Sculpture
Arctic Expression is an exhibit celebrating over 40 years of Canadian Inuit artistic achievements in sculpture. Following the initial wider exposure of the late 1940’s and the 1950’s, by the 1960’s and 70’s Inuit sculpture could be found originating from virtually every corner of the Arctic. Each region, or even community developed a unique style and artists whose vision and artistic ability is today recognized around the globe. The originality of expression continues today with new works from contemporary artists.
The Inuit Gallery of Vancouver is pleased to present signature works by many of the renowned artists in this exhibition. From the exquisite, sensitive but impact laden works of Kiawak and Kaka Ashoona from Baffin Island, to the raw power implicit in the creations of Andy Miki, John Kavik and George Tataniq from the Kivalliq region, as well as the puckish humour to be found in the works of Judas Ullulaq of the Kitikmeot, each one of the sculptures selected for inclusion expresses the artist’s unique vision. From the present day we have the ever engaging works of Toonoo Sharky and Mattiusi Iyaituk to highlight merely two.
Please join with us in celebrating Arctic Expression.
