Arctic Expressions
Sculptures from the many Inuit communities that dot the Canadian Arctic landscape are expressions of the artists who reside in Canada's northern environment. Transformation imagery illustrates the power of the shaman to assume the guise of any one of their spirit helpers. The spirit of the family is depicted in the sensitive portrayals of mothers and their children while the spirit of the never ending hunt comes out in works showing hunters as wellas the various animals that sustain the Inuit. Rendered in the serpentine of Baffin Island or the multi-hued steatites of the other regions as well as caribou bone, antler and increasingly rarely seen whalebone, this exhibition is a testament of the spirit of many artists.
In this exhibition we are pleased to include works by such established Inuit artists as Lucy Tasseor, Nuna Parr, and Axangayu Shaa as well as work by the younger generation including Napachie Sharky, Padlaya Qiatsuq and Louis Makkituq.
