Tuktu / Caribou
October 3 – 24
Over the seemingly boundless arctic landscape, vast migratory caribou herds stretching to the horizon were once a familiar sight. Traveling over one thousand miles every year with the cycle of the seasons, the caribou played a crucial role, not only in the Inuit diet, but also their oral and visual culture. For some, such as the Inuit of the Kivalliq region, an entire material culture emerged based on the caribou. This exhibition explores the way artists have engaged with the caribou as both subject matter and artistic medium, and the incredible diversity of forms that have arisen from this visual experimentation.
