Derrald Taylor
New Works
Derrald Taylor works in a variety of media, from alabaster to serpentine and muskox horn, creating beautiful renderings of birds, bears and drum dancers. Much of his youth was spent on the land hunting and fishing in the traditional Inuit lifestyle and this knowledge is reflected in his realistic depictions of the wildlife of the Arctic. Each of his works is different in the particulars but they all display a reverence for the subject he approaches, shown in details like the turn of a head or the frill of fur running down the back of a bear's leg. In the current collection you will find examples of his beautiful drum dancers carved from a soft-grey stone, a delicate muskox horn crane, or drumming bears carved from alabaster that beautifully captures the light.
