Drawing North: Contemporary Drawings from Kinngait

October 21 - November 10

This month we are delighted to present a collection of graphic works by a dynamic group of Kinngait’s finest contemporary visual artists. These scenes from the North bring together the traditional and contemporary, referencing the constant melding of worlds that contemporary Inuit experience.

The drawings in this collection show the progression of some of the most well known Inuit graphic artists working today. Ningiukulu Teevee’s work continues to draw from mythology and her new work like Aiviq Stuck on Hill Becomes Part of the Landscape and Tattooed Owl are complex and intriguing. Shuvinai Ashoona’s latest compositions are a mix of fantasy and fact, as are Qavavau Manumie’s fanciful fish, birds and belugas. Padloo Samayualie’s observations of the world around her continue to be highly precise and detailed as in Old Power Plant. We are also pleased to present two wonderfully expressive drawings by the late Tim Pitsiulak.

The expressive and engaging compositions come from a long tradition of drawing in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), dating back to the establishment of the graphics program, when the drawings were produced to support the print program. Over the years the drawings came to be valued as artworks in themselves and today are celebrated internationally.

All works are available immediately.
