Emerging Artists
June 14 - 28
We are excited to present a collection of artworks from a talented group of emerging artists from the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art. Featuring intricately carved spoons and bowls, as well as remarkably innovative masks, both hanging and free-standing, this collection highlights the extraordinary skill of these new artists.
The Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, located in Terrace, British Columbia, stands as a pivotal institution dedicated to the preservation and continuation of Northwest Coast art traditions. Founded in 2006, the school is named in honor of Freda Diesing, a Haida master carver and a trailblazing female artist whose work significantly contributed to the revival of Indigenous art throughout the country. The school provides an immersive educational experience that combines traditional and contemporary art practices, fostering a deep understanding of cultural heritage among its students. It offers comprehensive programs in carving, painting, and design, guided by experienced Indigenous artists and cultural knowledge holders.
The founding members of the Freda Diesing School include Dempsey Bob and his nephews Ken McNeil, and Stan Bevan, all of whom are highly respected artists and educators within the Northwest Coast art community. All three artists have been instrumental in mentoring the next generation of artists. Acclaimed for their intricate carvings and contributions to public art, Bob, McNeil, and Bevan bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to the school. Together, they have created a nurturing environment that emphasizes the importance of cultural identity, artistic excellence, and community engagement, ensuring that the rich traditions of Northwest Coast art continue to thrive for future generations.
Today, Haisla artist Nathan Wilson and Nisga'a artist Nakkita Trimble are at the forefront of the school, serving as skilled instructors and mentors to the students. This collection shows art works by only some of the talented artists currently attending the school. We look forward to seeing more works by many of these artists in the future!
