Into the Light - Jennifer Walden
“Light changes our perception of things, and enhances the beauty of a moment. Something simple, slight movement, turn of the head, step forward, they can all be transformed to something profoundly dramatic once the light hits them.” – Jennifer Walden
Since her first solo exhibition with the Inuit Gallery in 2009, Yellowknife-based artist Jennifer Walden has continued to push boundaries and explore new techniques and themes. Her desire to keep her practice current and reflect the changing landscape of the North is evidenced by her aesthetic evolution, which has resulted in this spectacular collection that mirrors the dynamism of the North. From her dramatic landscapes to her spirited wildlife portraits, Jennifer retains an unparalleled ability to translate the beauty and atmosphere of the North onto canvas.
After six months studying Renaissance painting techniques and frescoes in Italy, Into the Light marks a return to the artist’s interest in wildlife representations and highly sculptural surfaces. Light quality and its effect on our perception brings unity to the collection, which demonstrate a revitalized approach that marries Jennifer’s style with the techniques she absorbed during her residency abroad.
Thickly layered acrylic paint projects from the canvas surface in Big Horn, in which a lone bighorn sheep walks through vibrantly coloured grass; a pair of seabirds float weightlessly against the pale grey sky in A Dance of Terns; and Jennifer’s spirited take on the traditional still life in Flowers in the Rain suggests the rebirth of the land after a long, northern winter.
We are delighted to share the work of Jennifer Walden with you, and we hope you enjoy this exquisite collection.
