John Sabourin: Raven's Journey

After a month-long trek through the Nahanni National Park near Yellowknife, NWT, this summer, John Sabourin returned to his studio refreshed and inspired. The result was eleven new carvings that reaffirm his deep connection to the land and animals of the region. John has always been inspired by the forces of nature and how the elements play on the land, as you see in his Eagle Spiral or the inclusion of a marble orb, suggesting the full moon in an inky sky in Raven's Roots. His work often includes spirals that can be read as eddies in the water or a representation of the wind. These abstract forms support figures that lend a narrative to the carvings, as found in his beautiful carving River Journey, with its canoe riding the curve of a spiral while a bear and raven grace its side. John Sabourin has a unique ability to take a static medium like stone and create both a sense of movement and an imaginative ground for the viewer to explore.
