Featured Artist: Qaqaq (Kaka) Ashoona and Koomuatuk (Kuzy) Curley
Qaqaq (Kaka) Ashoona comes from an important artistic family based out of Kinngait (Cape Dorset). He was the son of tribal leader Ashoona and the world-famous Inuit artist Pitseolak Ashoona, OC, RCA (1904 - 1983).
We are fortunate to offer two artworks by Qaqaq Ashoona currently in the gallery. Renowned for capturing fluidity and roundness in his stone figures, the 1986 “Kneeling Woman” reveals a beautifully soft and serene expression amidst plump, lively cheeks. His 1990 piece titled “Sedna”, conveys the contentment of the Inuit Sea Goddess through her combed hair and graceful pose. Known to have found carving faces challenging but most satisfying, both of these sculptures feature timeless and elegant expressions.
Qaqaq’s legacy has inspired generations of Inuit artists, including his talented grandson, Koomuatuk (Kuzy) Curley whose outstanding sculpture we show beside those of Qaqaq Ashoona's
