Kenojuak Ashevak was recently recognised in Heritage Minutes.

The Inuit Gallery of Vancouver is very pleased to offer a small group of drawings by the late Kenojuak Ashevak of Cape Dorset.  From her initial creations, virtually at the dawn of the graphics program in Cape Dorset, Kenojuak has been a perennial favourite for her renderings of the animals and other imagery that surround the Inuit in the arctic.  In these drawings, which range in date from the 1980's up until close to her death in January of 2013, we see her vivid imagination at work.  Her use of colour is unmistakable and we immediately recognize her distinctive style for her much loved birds, dogs and of course the iconic owl.  These are very much working drawings and she has used paper that was available to her, not all of which was pristine at the time the drawings were created.  We can see where she has changed her mind about the position of a leg, the arch of the back of bird or the curve of a beak, making these all the more individual expressions of the artist's exacting pursuit of just the right combination to attain the desired affect.  Some of these have had the effect of time take its toll due to the mediums used which included felt pen, coloured pencil, graphite and ink.
