For decades, the communities that make up the Kivalliq region, what used to be called the Keewatin, have been home to artists producing unique and powerful sculptures shaped by the harsh realities as well as the sometimes subtle or often dramatic joys of living in the arctic. These works of art have made their way into homes, hearts and collections worldwide. For a variety of reasons, works from private collections come back onto the market and we are thus privileged to see these marvelous creations from the past once again on center stage.
Kivalliq Collections is a group of works that come mainly from private collections and feature works by some of the areas’ most sought-after artists such as Luke Iksaktaaryuk, Pangnark, Tiktak, as well as fantastic works by lesser known artists. We are also pleased to include a few select contemporary pieces that we feel are equal to those of the past.
Carved in the dense, difficult stones of the region, some sculptures have been worked to a remarkable fineness of detail while others have a minimalist approach. The fantastic shapes of caribou antler and bone are often incorporated into these compositions or are entirely made from those materials. Scale ranges from almost miniatures to those which would be defined as medium. With few exceptions, these are works that beg to be handled.
