I Hide in Your Skin
Paintings by Leah Pipe

The Inuit Gallery is pleased to present a new collection of paintings by Leah Pipe. In this group, Leah has created several portraits of women overlaid with animal imagery, speaking of the close relationship between humanity and the natural environment. Leah collaborated with Nathan Combs on the following statement for this collection:
"We all have guides that whisper to us. We have hearts that are shared by an animal being, that speak to us and heal us. We can hide within them, floating within, carried by their muscle and bone. They are our feathered wild protectors. Or do they hide within us, crouching, perfectly fitted, waiting for the right questions to be asked?
When paint comes to canvas and the image... no, the feelings emerge in the artist's heart, her hand starts to tell the tale. Whether a Wolf has shed its human skin or the Raven has a tall tale to tell, Leah reaches for the meaning in subtle yet vibrant details. In the long moments between brush strokes, the conversation is quietly conveyed. The beautiful skill of showing how the black birds' feathers are black as night, how the lines of an elder's face shows the wisdom in her age – each piece tells its different story to each individual who takes the time to appreciate each painting. Let your mind wonder, let the creation of the story captivate your curiosity. Each piece you see here is your own story, a story told by the artist. Come and explore within yourself.
This body of work is strung together with an underlying message about how intimately we, as humans, are connected to the natural environment and all those that call this planet home. Each painting shows how beautiful life is when human and animal live harmoniously."
