My Call to You Is in the Wind

The Inuit Gallery is pleased to present a beautiful new collection of paintings and drawings by Hazelton-based, non-indigenous artist, Leah Pipe.

Pipe's acrylic paintings on canvas have already attracted great admiration for her placement of ravens and other animals against a solid background, which has the effect of pushing the figure to the foreground so the viewer can appreciate the beauty of the animal and the quality of her brushwork.  In this new collection Leah further demonstrates not only her range in subjects but fully demonstrates her incredible technical skill as an artist.  The portfolio includes sensitively drawn images of First Nations women based on archival photographs.  Having worked as the Creative Director for thirteen years in 'Ksan Historical Village and Museum in Hazelton, she had the opportunity to research images that were often unattributed and developed a process that is respectful, as she attempted to recover the identities of the women in the photographs. 

In addition to three new acrylic on canvas images - of a Timber wolf (Moon Lake), a raven (Ammolite Hunter) and a Barn owl (Silent Flight) - Leah has sent two amazing, larger scale drawings: of a contest between two elk (Antler Battle:  Elk), and of a Mountain Goat Skull.  We have also included two smaller watercolour paintings:  a wind blown raven (Water Raven) and a curious owl (Snowy Owl Stare).
