Evgeniy Salinder: Sirtya
Last year the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver introduced indigenous Nenets artist, Evgenyi Salinder’s charming Sirtya figures to the delight of our clients. We have a wonderful new collection of Sirtya, carved from reindeer antler.
The Sirtya, a mythical race who lived in the tundra before the current Nenets people, loom large in Nenets folklore. They are thought to have been small people who dressed in white, had light-blue eyes, and who lived underground, accessed through tall, sandy hills. Among the figures in this new collection, Evgenyi Salinder has created antlered shamans, figures guarding their mammoth herds, female figures, mythical "earthy" mammoths, dashing reindeer, and many others.
