Small Treasures 2012
Saturday January 28th marks the 9th anniversary of our perennially popular exhibition - Small Treasures. It's always a pleasure to put together this collection of sculptures on a more intimate scale. This year’s selection of 155 pieces covers contemporary works from both well known artists to those just beginning to establish their reputations. Small treasures is always an appropriate title as a great many of these beg to be picked up and handled and, regardless of size, they certainly are to be treasured.
Subject matter is typically varied, from charming bears in the luscious serpentine of Baffin Island more whimsical works such as the tricycle by Alashua Sharky, the scissors of Mesut Celebi and the lighter by Mosesie Pootoogook, to mention only three. We are especially pleased to include the work of a new artist to the gallery, Harry Simigak of Nain, Labrador.
We have been fortunate to secure a number of the masters’ work including the particularly lovely see saw figures by the late Luke Anowatalik as well new creations by the still active Barnabus Arnasungaaq and Toona Iquliq.
