Announcing "Stories from the Outpost", a solo exhibition featuring the stunning sculptures of Inuit artist Koomuatuk Curley. Inspired by his childhood experiences of spending summers living on the land with his grandparents, renowned Inuit artists Kaka Ashoona and Mayoreak Ashoona, Curley's sculptures transport us to a world of traditional Inuit knowledge and storytelling.

Through his art, Koomuatuk, or Kuzy to his friends, creates a bridge between the past and present, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the Inuit while also highlighting the challenges faced by modern Inuit communities. His sculptures serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural heritage and the need for cultural preservation in a rapidly changing world.

Kuzy hails from one of the most prominent artistic lineages in Kinngait, encompassing notable family members Kiugak, Shuvinai, and Ningeosiaq Ashoona, alongside Annie Pootoogook (to mention just a few). Drawing from his grandfather Kaka’s teachings, many of his sculptures embody the essence of traditional Inuit art. However, Curley also delves into modern themes, such as his portrait of his great grandmother, renowned graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona, and a sculpture depicting a diesel drum, symbolizing the impact of industrialization and globalization on traditional Inuit ways of life. These artworks serve as reminders of the importance of preserving Inuit culture and practices.
