Susan A. Point,O.C., DFA., RCA., D.Litt.

June 14 - July 5

We are pleased to showcase two phenomenal original art works by renowned Musqueam artist Susan A. Point. The sculpture titled Fusion was created in red cedar and powder-coated aluminum and is the basis for a public artwork of the same name situated at Granville and W. 70th Avenue in south Vancouver.

Fusion stems from the theme of the People of the Grass, as well as the Salmon People, which are uniquely Musqueam. Carved and painted cedar in the form of river grass sprouts from a circular cedar base, with bronze-coloured aluminum salmon emerging from a central axis spreading out in the four sacred directions. The human element is evident within the bodies of the Salmon, with cattails interconnecting their swimming forms.

Another original work by Point is a circular glass and red cedar whorl panel titled Cranes. Etched within the surface of the glass are four symmetrical pairs of cranes depicted face to face, their beaks touching in a courtship ritual. Looking closely at the space between the cranes, each pair of cranes again etched on the reverse side of the glass, this time with both their beaks open and pointing skyward.

Along with these two originals, this collection of works by Susan Point features more than three dozen limited edition serigraph prints spanning more than thirty years of Point's career. Of particular note is her latest work, Symphony of Butterflies State II, a reimagining of Point's 2006 print of the same name, this time on a much larger scale, featuring softer hues of blue and an emphasis on orange and black.
