Tupilak

Feb 16 - March 9
A form of traditional Inuit art originating in Greenland, tupilak are a physical representation of a supernatural spirit. In Inuit mythology, models of tupilak spirits are believed to be created by shamans and used for various purposes such as revenge, protection, or hunting. They are often depicted as powerful and dangerous, capable of causing harm to both humans and animals. However, tupilaks can also be used for good, such as protecting a community from harm or helping to ensure a successful hunt.
This phenomenal group of 18 tupilak, carved in ivory sperm whale teeth, represent the power and mystery of the natural world, as well as the important role of shamanism and spiritual beliefs in Inuit culture.
