Unity

Northwest Coast Paddle Collection
Nov. 20 - Dec. 11

Following the rhythm of a paddle song, a steersman strikes his paddle against the side of the canoe, creating beats that guide the paddlers in steady and united strokes. The whole movement of the group supports and strengthens the community’s unity through the process of reaching the same destination and spiritual goal of enlightenment.

A paddle is an instrument of unity and alliance. The striking images and design presented on paddles exhibit important family lineage and the interconnection of man and animal in nature. With great pleasure, the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver presents masterfully carved paddles and painted by Bill Henderson, John Marston and Richard Sumner among many others. Their work displays the greater theme of unity through their choice of imagery, material and color accents presented on their paddles.

Remarkably, many of the paddles in this collection are worked on both sides. Marcel Russ employs a unique formline perspective in his design. From his interest in transformation, the intricate imagery of man and animal figures elegantly intertwined display the spiritual connection between humans and nature. Joshua Prescott’s highly designed paddle with inlayed abalone shell and operculum, showcases a brilliant use of different material. With abstract and elegant formlines, he creates a harmonious design uniting six animal figures on the same beautifully carved and painted paddle. Richard Sumner, best known for his gorgeous bentwood boxes, has contributed an Eagle Paddle, spectacularly carved and painted, highlighting its beauty.

We invite you to enjoy this collection of paddles and we look forward to discussing them with you.
