Cee Pootoogook was born in 1967 in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island. Cee comes from an illustrious family. Both his mother Napatchie and his grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona were renowned graphic artists. Although Cee grew up watching both his mother and grandmother, it wasn’t until he registered in the Nunavut Arctic College drawing and printmaking diploma program that he realized carving was in his blood. Cee says he prefers carving over drawing and printmaking. Perhaps he has resisted the family pressure to “keep the family tradition alive” and start his own tradition in carving. Cee's work continues to be exhibited both across Canada and internationally as well.
