(1971 – Present, Tlingit)

Ken Anderson is a largely self-taught artist who works primarily in a traditional Northern style in a range of media, including wood, metal, stone, and paint. Born in 1971 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Ken is of mixed Teslin, Tlingit, and Scandinavian descent. Much of his training has been informal, consisting of first hand research of various museum collections and the close study of historical objects, however in 1999, Ken attended a symposium organized by master carvers Eugene Alfred and Stan Bevan that helped refine his carving technique. He has shown in both commercial and public galleries across Canada, and he has produced a number of commissioned works. Ken particularly enjoys working on commissions as he views this work as serving a specific purpose as opposed to merely satisfying his own artistic creativity. Today Ken also works as a teacher, leading workshops and presentations on carving and painting, and his work can be found in several important public collections.
