Tony Curley was born into a family of carvers in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island, Nunavut (formerly Northwest Territories) on April 1, 1964. Tony has been carving for over 25 years. He loves to carve and says that he has “a natural instinct in my soul.” His favourite subject matter is the Canada Goose, although he also portrays polar bears. He has developed a unique style, in which the goose incorporates a long, delicately shaped neck and graceful outline, with minimal detail on the tail feathers. Tony’s style is symbolic of Cape Dorset art, rooted in a love of naturalism with added dramatic expression. He uses serpentine, a very hard metamorphic rock with a composition similar to jadeite which is indigenous to the lower Baffin Island.
