Wild Portraits: New Work by Jennifer Walden
March 23 - April 13
Jennifer Walden is well known for her richly textured paintings depicting the animals and landscape of the Canadian north. Jennifer often places her subjects at the very front of the foreground, achieving a 3-dimensional appearance in which the figures sometimes even seem to break through the front of the picture plane. In the past year or so she has been incorporating new visual and colour effects into her paintings, lending them a new vibrancy and visual interest. The Inuit Gallery of Vancouver is proud to present a new collection of her oil, acrylic and mixed media work. Of this new series, Jennifer says:
“Often the subject of a painting becomes a vehicle to make a statement about something else. More often than not this “something else” that is infused into the painting is the current mood of the artist. Each painting becomes a portrait. A portrait of a wild animal caught in a moment in time. Yet simultaneously each one is a self-portrait capturing an emotional state, a hint of my life, the joys and trials that inspire me to paint each day.”
