Born before massive changes came to the Arctic, both Napachie Pootoogook (1938-2002) and Pudlo Pudlat (1916-1992) witnessed both the old ways and the marvels brought by greater contact with the south. Pudlo was in his 40s when he met James Houston and started his drawing and print making career. His work is known for its playfulness and his fascination with the new sights and objects he encountered as the north was brought into closer contact with southern Canada. Likewise, Napachie Pootoogook (1938-2002) started to work as a printer at the Cape Dorset studio in the 1950s, began drawing in the early 1960s and became a regular contributor to the annual print collection in the early 1970s. Most of her work pays tribute to the traditional ways of life, carefully recording typical activities, clothing, personal narratives and local history. Her style is influenced by her participation in the painting and drawing workshops presented by the cooperative in 1976, which influenced her rendering of the landscape and spatial composition. This pairing of artists represents a nostalgic vision of the past and an enthusiastic view of the contemporary.
