Napachie Ashoona
(1974 – Present)
The son of celebrated carver Kiawak Ashoona, Napachie is a Cape Dorset based carver who works primarily in the region’s local serpentine stone. Napachie learned how to carve by watching his father work and gradually learning to handle and maximize the stone’s natural texture. As a softer medium, serpentine allows Napachie to experiment with his carvings and explore new ideas, forms, and subjects through his work. Napachie prefers carving in darker stones with subtle gold veins, which accentuates the high level of detail and sharp relief in his work. His work often explores dynamic, figural scenes and mythological imagery.
