Stephen Bruce

(1968 – Present, Kwakwaka’wakw)

Kwakwaka’wakw artist Stephen Bruce was born in 1968 in the culturally rich community of Alert Bay, located near the north end of Vancouver Island. In 1986, Stephen began carving under the direction of Wayne Alfred, Beau Dick, and Joe Peters. Also an accomplished painter, Stephen has since worked as an assistant to several artists on a number of monumental commissions. One of his major projects was the creation of a replica Kwakwaka’wakw village for a theme park in the Netherlands.
