This remarkable sculpture by celebrated Inuit artist Henry Evaluardjuk captures the profound tenderness of the mother-child bond with extraordinary artistry and emotional depth. Standing at an impressive 15.75 inches tall, the piece depicts a mother clad in a traditional amauti, her hood gracefully raised to reveal the endearing face of her child nestled close beside her own. Carved from stone with immense precision, the mother's gloved hands rest calmly at her sides, while a delicate opening between her boots and the rear hem of her parka adds subtle visual interest to the flowing contours of her figure.
Before gaining widespread acclaim for his dynamic bear carvings in the 1970s, Evaluardjuk explored a wide range of subject matter—including powerful human forms—after relocating to Iqaluit in the early 1960s following tuberculosis treatment in the South. This work stands among the more significant figural sculptures of his early period, showcasing his exceptional ability to convey lifelike emotion. The expressive, intimate faces of the mother and child demonstrate Evaluardjuk's rare talent for capturing the human spirit in stone—a poignant and timeless tribute to Inuit family life.
