Expressive and enigmatic, this kneeling figure by Judas Ullulaq captures a moment suspended between movement and meaning. The Inuk leans heavily to one side, one leg tucked beneath him while the other stretches outward, anchoring a pose both grounded and dynamic. In his hands, he clutches a loop of sinew—its purpose unclear, yet suggestive of restraint, readiness, or repair. In Inuit life, sinew was an essential material: used to sew skin clothing, string bows, lash sleds, or bind tools—all acts of survival and continuity.
The figure’s intense gaze and wide-mouthed expression, with inlaid antler teeth and dark stone pupils, pull us into Ullulaq’s imaginative world. As in much of his work, there’s both humour and intensity, a theatrical presence that blurs the line between human, spirit, and story.
