These two green serpentine walking bear sculptures by celebrated Inuit artist Henry Evaluardjuk—affectionately known for his iconic “Henry Bears”—are superb examples of his exceptional rendering of polar bears in motion. The smaller of the two, measuring 8 inches in length, appears to be a younger bear, its darker green stone beautifully accented with lighter variegation around the head and shoulder hump. With its head lifted and nose raised, the bear seems to be catching a scent on the breeze, a moment of instinctual curiosity frozen in stone. In contrast, the larger 12-inch bear carries the weight and presence of age, its elongated head and more prominent snout lowered toward the ground, as if tracking something unseen. Both sculptures display the signature turned-in front paws characteristic of polar bear anatomy, a subtle detail that heightens their realism. With perfect proportions and lifelike movement, these works stand as remarkable examples of Evaluardjuk’s enduring legacy and the quiet strength and grace of the Arctic’s most iconic creature.
