Introduction
The 40th anniversary of an art gallery is definitely an event to be celebrated – a lot happens over the span of four decades, and like a 40th birthday or wedding anniversary, it is a time to reflect on what we’ve experienced, how we’ve grown and what we want for the future. This is a time to celebrate not only a remarkable journey, but also to express our gratitude to the artists, collectors, staff and the many others who have made this path possible. The Inuit Gallery of Vancouver was founded in 1979 by Joseph Murphy out of a love for the purity of expression found in Inuit Art, then grew in the early 1980s when the resurgence of Northwest Coast First Nation art allowed us to bring together new artists and collectors, fostering a whole new passion. After Joe Murphy’s passing in the mid-1990’s, the Inuit Gallery continued under the direction and ownership of Melanie Zavediuk.
