Gryn White
(1977 - Present)
Gryn, whose Haida name is Duugwi (“strong Haida”), has been carving since 2002. He is descended from a family rich in artists, including his father, Greg Lightbown, from whom he learned many of his skills. While Gryn works with a variety of media, he is well known for his argillite carving. In recent years, he has become proficient in inlay work. In 2008, he was one of fourteen carvers featured in the book ‘Breathing Stone’ by Carol Sheehan. His family crests are Raven and Woman with the Moon.
“I want to create contemporary Haida art within these traditional boundaries. I’m not much interested in coming up with a new form of Haida art. I want to honour and feel continuity with the past.”
