(1953 – Present, Kwakwaka’wakw)

Harold Alfred was born in 1953 in the culturally rich village of Alert Bay, British Columbia. Raised by his grandparents, Harold is a member of the ‘Namgis Band. During his childhood, Harold was constantly exposed to the incredible diversity of artistic practices embodied by the local artists, which would continue to influence his later work and the development of his individual style. Harold has been fortunate to study with Tony Hunt Sr., Doug Cranmer, and Oscar Matilpi. He has also taken formal art courses at Malaspina College, which has helped hone his technical skills in woodcarving and jewelry making. Harold often collaborates with other artists, such as Adolf Oetter and Kirby Rivest, with whom he has created striking work in copper and glass respectively.
