Lucas Aaluk
1980s – Present
Born in Gjoa Haven to a family of carvers, emerging young artist Lucas Aaluk has been carving professionally for the past ten years. Lucas’ mother, Leonie Nuyaoqiq Aaluk, is a successful carver who has exhibited outside the arctic since 1974, when her work was first included in the landmark exhibition, “From the Bottom of the Kudlik: Carvings and Artifacts from Gjoa Haven,” held in Toronto. Lucas’ carvings are often highly spiritual in nature, and he prefers carving dynamic, stylized forms with boldly expressive faces.
