Miali Akavak was born in Kimmirut in 1963. Both her grandfather and her mother were artists, primarily working with stone carving. Miali works mostly as a jeweler, having taken several courses since 1982 in jewelry making, prospecting, and lapidary work. She also experimented with sewing and photography. In 2003, she undertook a fourteen week course in Kimmirut. Today, she is an active member of the Kimmirut Jewelers Society and often produces stunning pieces combining sterling silver with local Kimmirut stones, like lapis lazuli, and traditional materials including antler, ivory, and gold
